Assessment of the Eco-Labelling System in the Republic of Moldova, in line With the European Union Requirements
The labelling system has become not only a response to the population’s concern about the worsening state of the environment, but rather proved to be an efficient method for stimulating the producers to introduce new eco-friendly technologies and processes aimed at ensuring a reasonable use of natural resources. According to ISO 14020, eco-labelling represents a set of voluntary instruments aiming to stimulate the demand for products and services with fewer impacts on the environment by providing essential information on their life cycle, in order to meet the customer demand for environmental information. In other words, the main objective of eco-labelling is to help the consumer make an informed choice in favour of products that pose a lesser threat to the environment and/or of products produced by using the best green technologies. This report has been developed under the project on the “European Union for Environment Action” (EU4Environment), which is funded by the European Union and implemented by the OECD, UNECE, UNEP, UNIDO, and the World Bank. The report was prepared by Ms. Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov (Executive Director), Ms. Irina Punga (Law Programmes Consultant) and Ms. Natalia Guranda (Project Coordinator) of PA EcoContact, the UNEP’s implementing partner in Moldova, under the guidance of UNEP, and afterwards presented and discussed with the stakeholders during a webinar which took place on the18th of December 2020, on the Promotion of eco-labelling in Moldova in the framework of EU4Environment programme. Comments were provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment and other stakeholders, and ultimately, incorporated into the report.
