International Good Practice Principles for Sustainable Infrastructure: Integrated, Systems-level Approaches for Policymakers

This document aims to promote the adoption of integrated, systems-level approaches to sustainable infrastructure planning, delivery, and management. Recognizing that every country has unique circumstances, it presents policymakers with guiding principles for integrating environmental, social, and economic sustainability over the entire infrastructure lifecycle, in a way that they can be adapted and applied to any specific national context. In doing this, it aims to help governments at all levels move from “doing infrastructure right” to “doing the right infrastructure” that best meets service needs in a sustainable way. The principles outlined herein can be broadly applied to all infrastructure systems, including those for transport, housing, energy, water and sanitation, waste management, food, and telecommunications, among others.
