La estructura social del calcolítico palestinense : una propuesta de interpretación desde el materialismo histórico
Abstract: In this paper we analyze the different interpretations proposed by scholars about the social structure of the Chalcolithic (Ghassulian) period of the southern Levant. Special attention is given to those proposals which argue the presence of chiefdoms or egalitarian societies in this time span. It is considered that these interpretations fail to account for the characteristics of the period, which are the result of the forcible application of the concepts of neo-evolutionism. It is proposed to apply a historical materialist approach, particularly from the concept of community-patriarchal mode of production. We conclude that what prevailed during the southern Levantine Chalcolithic was an economic-social formation dominated by agropastoral communities with relatively developed craft industries.
