The COVID pandemic in children: an alert

Abstract: During the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the disease was thought to be benign and infrequent in children. Since March, multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in children associated with the pandemic has emerged as a serious disease. It has similarities with Kawasaki disease, but also important differences, such as older age, additional abdominal symptoms, respiratory difficulties, increased severity of inflammation, heart failure, and shock. We speculate in this review: 1. If MIS-C is an accelerated form of Kawasaki disease. 2. If it is a different form. 3. Simply MIS-C is a serious variant of COVID 19 in children. The presence of the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children associated with COVID-19 (MIS-C or PIMS-TS), in much of the world, should alert the medical community in countries where it has not yet been recognized.
