Mobilization in the Intensive Care Unit: systematic review

Prolonged stay in the Intensive Care Unit and mechanical ventilation are associated with functional decline, increased morbidity and mortality, and healthcare costs. The early mobilization seems to have beneficial effects on these factors. The aim of this study was to systematize knowledge about early mobilization in the Intensive Care Unit. This is a systematic review, with inclusion of clinical trials published between 1998 and 2012. We used the scale Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) to assess the methodological quality of the studies. Eight studies were included and analyzed. It was concluded that early mobilization in the Intensive Care Unit has a significant impact on patients' functional outcomes.
