Retroperitoneal hematoma after vaginal delivery caused by avulsion of the right ovarian vein. A rare complication

Abstract Retroperitoneal hematomas are a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of pregnancy and childbirth. Due do the rarity of these events and the lack of specific signs and symptoms, the diagnosis and treatment are often delayed. The main clinical features are signs of internal bleeding, starting from isolated anemia up to hypovolemic shock. We present a case of a spontaneous retroperitoneal hematoma occurring after a completely non-traumatic vaginal delivery, caused by the avulsion of the ovarian vein from its insertion in the inferior vena cava.
