Influence of sedentary behaviour on the practice of physical activity in climacteric women

Abstract The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of sedentary behaviour on the practice of physical activity in climacteric women. This was a cross-sectional study with a random sample of 873 women assisted in Family Health Strategy units in the city of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A structural equation model was tested to assess the influence of sedentary behaviour on the practice of physical activity. The results revealed that sedentary behaviour has a negative effect on light, moderate and vigorous activities, explaining 8, 2 and 6%, respectively, of the variability of these variables. It was also observed that the increase in sedentary behaviour has a negative effect on light (β= –0.04), moderate (β= –0.10) and vigorous (β= –0.17) activities. Sedentary behaviour negatively affects the performance of light, moderate and vigorous physical activity in climacteric women assisted by the Family Health Strategy.
