Reproductive capacity: Formation of fruits and seeds in Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Degener and Passiflora cincinnata Mast

Abstract The objective of this investigation was to value the reproductive capacity of an introduction of P. edulis f. flavicarpa (introduction 218) and one of P. cincinnata (introduction L057) coming from the Bank of Germoplasma of Passifloraceae of the INIA. In order to determine the reproductive capacity, 49 flower buds in each one of the species were marked. The study was done until the maturation of fruits and the number of aborted reproductive structures (buds, flowers, fruits, seeds and ovules) was determinated. In other flowers were counted the number of ovules/ovary and the number of seeds/fruit, in order to value the percentage of produced seeds. It was concluded that real reproductive capacity was low in relation to produced fruits (P. cincinnata 8.16% and P. edulis f. flavicarpa 4.08%), whereas the amount of produced seeds was high (P. cincinnata 71.02% and P. edulis f. flavicarpa 69,84%)
