Daños de la rata Sigmodon hirsutus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) al cultivo de maní (Arachis hypogaea) en Alajuela, Costa Rica

ABSTRACT: Damage by the rat Sigmodon hirsutus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) to groundnut crop (Arachis hypogaea) in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The peanut plant (Arachis hypogaea) is affected by several vertebrates but there are few studies about the subject in Central America. We evaluated the damage caused by the cotton rat (Sigmodon hirsutus) during two production periods (2006-2007) in Estación Experimental Fabio Baudrit in La Garita, Alajuela, Costa Rica. Each month rodents were captured with snap traps. At the moment of the harvest, a complete recollection of the production was made in 2-3m plots. The pods were classified into big, medium and small, and the damage caused by rats was evaluated in each category. The pods had average weights of 2,8, 1,8 and 1,1g for the referred categories in the first period, and 2,9, 2,1 and 1,3g for other batch, and 2,8, 2,1 y 1,3 g for the other batch in the second period. We estimated a level of damage of 5,28% for the first period, and none in the second period. We conclude that S. hirsutus damage can be reduced by collecting the crop in December. KEYWORDS: Peanut, groundnut, vertebrate pests, damage, cotton rat.
