Breve visión sobre el suelo: rol, importancia, funciones, calidad e indicadores

Soil is not only the floor to put the feet and the support for the plants; since it is a mixture of mineral particles, organic matter (OM), water and air. This is the means of nutrition of crops and at the same time is the basis of profitability of agriculture. Humanity emphasizes its development based on wealth and resources. The importance of maintaining a chemical, physical and biological balance in the soil has been underestimated by soil users in production systems and its effect has brought poor results and no capacity to sustain a good yield by themselves; demanding conservation and management practices to increase their resilience. This resource is part of the development of our countries as a support for agriculture, the basis for the establishment of infrastructures for industries, means of transport and the commercialization of goods and services (production). In addition to its positive effects on the environment, acting like a sponge in the retention of water and pollutants. These arguments show the need to know the soil, its role, importance, functions, its quality and health, indicators and quality variables. Therefore, the information compiled is intended to increase knowledge on soil and its importance for producers and studies of this resource, both in Latin America and the Caribbean, in order to give greater care and respect to it.
