Obesity and food addiction are an emerging public health problem in the world. Food addiction is a theoretical proposal with important experimental and clinical support. The present article discusses evidence on food addiction, as well as its neurobiological basis and the effects on brain plasticity following sugar consumption. This work is presented as a perspective to clarify the capacity of foods rich in sugars to stimulate reward systems and to delve into a model of sugar addiction, which can be used in preclinical research.
