Comparison of the risk of eating disorders in students before and during the confinement by COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures implemented to prevent its spread have generated a new socio-family context, with relevant implications and limitations in the social, family, emotional and economic interactions. It has been observed that the presence of factors such as fear of contagion, anxiety, stress, increased use of the internet and social networks, body dissatisfaction, and anguish, among others, have generated a negative psychological impact and could be associated with the appearance of eating disorders in vulnerable populations, including college students. The objective of this research was to determine the prevalence of Eating Disorders (EDs) risk in undergraduate students of Centro Universitario del Sur (CUSur), Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico and to compare the results of phase 1 (2018, pre-lockdown) and phase 2 (2021, under lockdown situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic). This was a quantitative research, based on a descriptive and comparative study, with a non-experimental design and a total sample of 196 participants (98 for each phase). The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40) was applied and provided sociodemographic data in phase 1, while in phase 2 an online questionnaire was applied using Google Forms. Statistically significant differences were observed between the risk of EDs or non-specified EDs and the study phase; with a percentage difference of 4.1% greater risk of EDs and 10.2% greater risk of non-specified EDs with respect to the prevalence of risk observed in phase 1.
