MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVES FOR WEEVILS (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE) ASSOCIATED WITH MUSACEA

Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) are important insect pests that affect various productive agroecosystems in tropical areas. In Panama, plantain and banana (Musaceae) are of strategic importance for both national trade and agro-exports, both crops being affected by species like Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824) and Metamasius hemipterus (Linnaeus, 1758). The aim of this work is to illustrate the different control alternatives for these weevils that affect musaceae crops, with orientation towards Integrated Pest Management (IPM); highlighting cultural, biological, ethological and chemical controls. According to the results, as cultural control, the main alternatives are the use of healthy seedlings, periodic monitoring to capture and manually eliminate insects. Regarding biological control, applications of Beauveria bassiana (Balsam) Vuillemin (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) have proven to be effective in controlling weevils, especially in combination with ethological control by installing traps made with the pseudostems after harvest. Chemical control is the last alternative to be applied, in extreme situations, recommending contact and ingestion insecticides of low toxicity. In addition, technological advances like entomopathogenic microorganisms and insecticides microencapsulation represent a potential to reduce costs in pest control. It is expected that these management alternatives, properly implemented, can contribute to the sustainability of Musaceae crops.
