GENUS Agrotis OCHSENHEIMER, 1816 (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE) AND ITS IMPORTANCE AS PESTS OF HORTICULTURAL CROPS
Family Noctuidae (Lepidoptera) includes pest species of importance in strategic crops for food and nutrition security (FNS), as well as for local trade and agro-exports. The genus Agrotis Ochsenheimer, 1816, commonly called “cutworms”, is one of the main problems after planting or transplanting vegetables and can cause the death of several seedlings. This work consists of a systematic review of these insects and their importance as pests in horticultural crops. To do this, a total of 53 references related to the subject were consulted, covering relevant aspects such as taxonomy, recognized species, damage they cause to crops and recommended management alternatives. According to the results, the genus Agrotis is made up of more than 300 recognized species, of which Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel, 1766), Agrotis malefida Guénée, 1852 and Agrotis robusta (Blanchard, 1852) stand out in the American continent. Among the crops most affected by larvae are potatoes, tomatoes, leafy vegetables and onions; In the latter the larvae can ascend to the foliage to feed. Among the recommended integrated pest management (IPM) alternatives, there are monitoring of adults using light traps, with the action threshold being five specimens per trap; cultural control by eliminating weeds and placing baits; As natural enemies, there are parasitoids of the Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) and Tachinidae (Diptera) families, as well as entomopathogenic organisms (fungi and nematodes); Regarding chemical control, indoxacarb and cypermethrin are some used active ingredients, but as the last option.
