Laboratory, greenhouse and field work were conducted in order to evaluate soil fertility and the response to fertilization in a rice area in Bayano, Panama province. Experiments were carried out in 1976, 1977 and 1978 an recent alluvial soils. Phosphorus of these soils was rather low (5 μ g/ml, using the North Carolina method). Potassium levels were medium 87 μ g/ml). Organic matter levels were also medium (3.48%). Average pH was 5.5. Aluminum content was low. The studies on fixing capacity of there soils showed that they did not have a fixing capacity for any of the elements tested. Greenhouse, work utilizing P 8417 sorgum as a tester, indicated positive response to nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur fertilization. Calcium, magnesium and zinc results were rather contradictory as tested by the North Carolina and Modified Olsen methods. The field work, utilizing “Anayansi” rice variety showed positive response only to nitrogen fertilization.
