The use of herbicides for weed control has been extensively evaluated with annual crops and to a lesser extent with forage legumes. An experiment was conducted in the Experimental Station of Gualaca, Panama, to evaluate weed control and selectivity of post and pre-emergent herbicides in the establishment of Pueraria phaseoloides, (Roxb) Benth. Results indicated that the herbicides applied had a differential effect on the survival of Kudzu seedlings, whith oxyfluorfen (0.5 kg/ha a.i.) producing less damage on the seedlings and good control of broad-leaf and leguminous weeds. Of the pre-emergent herbicides tested, linuron (2.0 kg/ha a.i.) negatively affected germination and survival of the Kudzu seedlings. The highest dry matter production of Kudzu was obtained with manual weed control, followed by the pre-emergent treatment with oxyfluorfen and a mixture of alaclor and acifluorfen as pre and post-emergent herbicides.
