EVALUATION OF THE REGENERATION CAPACITY OF NINE VARIETIES OF Centrosema macrocarpum IN DRY TROPICAL FOREST, PANAMA

The forage legume Centrosema macrocarpum has showed a good adaptation to the different edafoclimate conditions evaluated in Panama, being choosen as promisory of the Dry Tropical Forest, since 1980, year in what it was introduced. Under animal utilization, it was found that the persistency of this species is a limitant, due to the poor regeneration that it has under shepherd. Several research workers inform that to keep the persistency of Centrosema, is essential the regular replacement of the original plants, so that for vegetative propagation and/or the emergency of new regenerated seedlings of sexual seed. Through the introduction of nine varieties of C. macricarpum (CIAT 5062, 5434, 5452, 5620, 5674, 5735, 5740, 5887 and 15014), it was studied the potential of regeneration of them, under field conditions, in the Dry Tropical Forest of Panama. Due to this situation, it was installed and experiment in the Experimental Farm of El Ejido, in the 1992 year: from November/1991 (when it was initiated with a cut level) to July/1992 (when it finished); period when the number of taken roots (June/1992), the number of emerged seedlings (June/1992), and the coverture at the end of the period of evaluation (July/1992) were evaluated. The treatments comprised nine varieties oF C. macrocarpum which were distributed at random blocks, with three repetitions. The data was transformed to square root of Y + 0.5,  for the variance analysis. The results found showed satatistical differences (P<0.01) among CIAT 5740, 5887 and the other varieties, in the capacity of regeneration by sexual method. While it was not found that the vegetative way was of importance for the regeneration. In the observations of cover done to finish the research, it was found the higher covers (over 83%) in the varieties CIAT 5740 and 5887; on the other hand, the lower varieties (under 60%) were 5062 and 5452, while the others were in the range of 80 to 70%. The results permit to conclude: that the sexual regeneration of C. macrocarpum resulted to be the way of importance and that the varieties that showed high potential in the capacity of regeneration through the emergency of new seedlings were CIAT 5740 and 5887, while the varieties CIAT 5062 and 5452 were considered with low potential of regeneration. Due to these results, it is suggested to do new evaluations with the varieties CIAT 5740 and 5887, under conditions of utilization, to validate the results obtained from the plots, even if these are pure or associated.
