EVALUATION OF INSECTICIDES TO THE CONTROL OF THE LEAFMINER Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae) IN THE LETTUCE CROP.

The lettuce crop is very susceptible to the atack of the leafminers (Liriomyza spp.) from the stage of seedbeds to the plantations already commercially established, decreasing the output in 25%. The present research was done during the period between October 1991 and January 1992, in the Experimental Estation of Cerro Punta, district of Bugaba, Panama, located at the Northeast of the Province of Chiriqui at 8° 51' 4” of latitude North and 8° 34' 20” of longitude West, to an altitude of 1800 msnm. The main objetive was to evaluate the efficacy of insecticides to the control of Liriomyza spp. It was used the experimental design of completed blocks at random with four repetitions. The insecticides and combinations of the insecticides weekly applied were the followings: Cartap 50% PM (1.0 kg/ha); Tiocyclam hidrogenoxalato 50% PS (0.40 kg/ha); Ciromazina 75% PS (0.10 kg/ha); Abamectina 1.8% CE (0.20 lt/ha); Cartap 50% PM + Tiocyclam 50% PS + Ciromazina 75% PS + Abamectina 1.8% CE; Farmer's practice (Acefato 75% PS, Cipermetrina 60 EC and Deltametrina 25 EC) and the Witness without insecticides. The size of the experimental unit was 1.20 x 4.0 m planting the lettuce variety Climax. It was quantified the number of Liriomyza spp. adults per head of lettuce, per yellow traps with sticker (fat) in each plot, commercial output and it was done the economical analysis. The bigger number of adults per head of lettuce was gotten during the seventh week after the trasplant (SDDT) and the average of adults observed was less per head of lettuce during the first and second SDDT. During the capture of adults per trap per week, the ninth SDDT (lettuce harvest) surpassed to the rest of the weeks. At the level of protection and commercial output with less variable costs, the following treatments excelled: Abamectina 1.8% CE; Tiocyclam hidrogenoxalato 50% PS and the treatmen Cartap 50% PM + Tiocyclam 50% PS + Ciromazina 75% PS + Abamectina 1.8% CE.
