EVALUATION AND SELECTION OF ONION (Allium cepa) HYBRIDS AND CULTIVATES IN CERRO PUNTA, PROVINCE OF CHIRIQUI, PANAMA. 1996-1999.
Traditionally, the high lands of Chiriqui, Panama, are considered productive of onion, being the varieties Gladalan Brown and Regal, the most cultivated for the rainy and dry period, respectively. With the interest of identifying hybrids and cultivates experimental, the IDIAP evaluated from 1996-99, material of yellow skin, white and mansion, and that surpass to the commercial witnesses, to give response to national demand. It was established a regional test by year in the by-center of the IDIAP in Cerro Punta, located at 1,900 msnm; North latitude 8°51'90“ and 82°34'19” West length, with a monthly rainfall average of 64.55 mm, a mean temperature of 18.8°C. For the period 1996 and 1998 were evaluated 47 hybrids and 30 cultivates with an experimental design of BCA with four repetitions and for 1997 were used 36 cultivates and a design of Latice with three repetitions. In 1996, projected 14 materials including the commercial witnesses Gladalan Brown and Regal, Two of white, one red and 11 yellow skin; in 1997, 15 material, one of white, two red and 13 yellow skin and in 1998, 16 materials, one of white, one red and 14 yellow skin. Of the materials evaluated in 1996 and 1997, repeated in the two years as outstanding, Rio Silver and Regal, while, by color, the most outstanding were the targets, Rio Silver and Superex; the reds, Rio Raji Red and Red Bone, in addition to the yellow.
