Association of business entrepreneurship with social development in the cantons of Costa Rica in the year 2017

This study examines Costa Rican entrepreneurship during 2017, based on the comparison of the activities that requested licenses granted by the municipalities to develop an economic activity in the cantons of Costa Rica. In addition, possible associations between the distribution by activity groups, the business semi-formality rate, which measures the number of municipal licenses regarding the number of private sector employers registered in social security, and the value obtained in the Index of Social Development (IDS) for each canton, are verified. The results show that a high dependence on certain activities has significant associations with greater business semiformality and lower values in the IDS, according to the classification obtained for the cantons of the country.
