SEROPREVALENCE OF EQUINE PIROPLASMOSIS IN THREE REGIONS IN THE STATE OF VERACRUZ, MEXICO

Equine piroplasmosis is a disease transmitted mainly by ticks Amblyomma cajennense and Rhipicephalus microplus, which causes clinical signs similar to those of other hemoparasitic diseases, such as: decreased physical performance, depression, appetite loss, dehydration, fever, anemia, jaundice, hemoglobinuria and edema in the hind legs. All these can culminate in death without the specific treatment, which varies according to the type of hemoparasite in the individual. The objective of this study was to determine the serological presence of Theileria equi, Babesia caballi and mixed by both hemoprotozoa (T. equi and B. caballi) causing piroplasmosis in equids from the regions of Sotavento, Papaloapan and Los Tuxtlas in the state of Veracruz. The hypothesis was that piroplasmosis is found in 50 % of the equids in the aforementioned regions. Samples of 364 equids, of both genera, six months of age or older were collected, without antiprotozoal medication for at least 48 h before sampling. The samples were 110 in the Sotavento region, 168 in the Papaloapan and 86 in Los Tuxtlas. The sample size was obtained through the software Win Episcope ver. 2.0, by calculating the appropriate sampling fraction, the number of equids to be sampled in each region was determined. The serological diagnosis for each hemoprotozoo was made with commercial kits of cELISA. The general and the specific seroprevalences were calculated with the software STATA ver. 11.0. The general seroprevalence was: 84.3 % piroplasmosis, 74.4 % T. equi, 57.4 % B. caballi and 47.5 % of mixed infections with both hemoprotozoa. The endemicity of piroplasmosis in the three study regions was confirmed.
