CORRELATION BETWEEN SEEDLING RESISTANCE AND ADULT PLANT RESISTANCE TO YELLOW RUST AND SCALD IN BARLEY
A high correlation between seedling resistance and adult plant resistance has been found in some pathosystems. This facilitates the selection of resistance to plant pathogens. In the pathosystems of barleyPuccinia striiformis f. sp. hordei and Rhynchosporium secalis, that relationship is unknown. In light of that, 771 F4 barley lines (Hordeum vulgare L.) were derived from a cross between the Centinela cultivar (susceptible) and the LB IRAN/UNA8271//GLORIA?S?/ COME?S? line (resistant) by means of the uniseminal method, whose seedlings were inoculated in the greenhouse with uredospores of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. hordei strain 24. Another similar group of plants was inoculated with a mixture of five isolations of Rhynchosporium secalis. The type of infection of every line, in both groups, was assessed by means of a visual scale. After this, the seedlings were transplanted and advanced to F5. The F5 lines of both groups coming from the greenhouse were evaluated in the field, in Toluca, Estado de México, so as to evaluate their adult plant resistance to yellow rust (by means of the damaged leaf area percentage) and scald (by a visual scale). The correlation between seedling resistance and adult plant resistance for yellow rust, in the best cases, was low and positive (r=0.61, p?0.001), as well as for scald (r=0.43, p?0.001). Adult plant resistance in both pathosystems was found. Results show that the selection for the resistance to both pathogens must be made in adult plants, since it is not enough to measure the seedling resistance when selecting lines that are resistant in the adult plant stage.
