DISTRIBUTION AND ACCUMULATION TYPES OF CALCIUM CARBONATE IN SOILS OF THE COASTAL PLAINS OF TECOMAN, COLIMA

Calcium carbonate accumulation severely affects crop yields in the Colima coastal plains, however, its distribution and type of accumulation is unknown. The objective of this research was to characterize its presence and to describe soils having different amounts of calcium carbonate in the profile. A transect, consisting of a grid 500 by 500 m, 17.5 km long and 4.0 km wide was studied from the Caleras foot hills to the Pacific Ocean; the altitude ranges from 80 to 5 m. A diversity of soils was found, ranging from Arenosols to Vertisols, and Kastanozems, and from Calcisols to Phaeozems and Fluvisols. Calcium carbonate accumulation was related to the parent material, the decalcification process, the amount of rainfall and the location of the soil in the landscape. The main soils observed were Arenosols (15.0 %), Fluvisols (5.0 %), Phaeozems (15.0 %), Calcic Vertisols (10.0 %), Calcisols (30.0 %), Kastanozems (15.0 %) and Petric Calcisols (5.0 %). Diffuse accumulation was related to Calcisols, Vertisols, and Fluvisols; discontinuous accumulation was observed mainly in Kastanozems, and soils with luvic characteristics; a continuous accumulation (petric horizons 20 to 30 cm deep) was observed in Petric Calcisols located in lowlands close to the ocean in an AWo climate. No hardened horizons were found in the BS climate.
