INTERPRETATION OF THE PREDICTION FORMULA FOR SYNTHETIC PERFORMANCE

Aims and success from the research that must be done on synthetics depends importantly on an appropiate interpretation and evaluation of the current theory on this topic. In this study, using as methodological basis the concept of genotypic array and its basic theory, it is proved that what Busbice (1970), vaguely, refers to as the average yield of the conceptual (or real) homozygous parents in the ancestry of the synthetic and the yield resulting from heterozygosis when it is maximum (F=0), are, respectively, the mean (Ho) of the genotypic values of the individuals in the synthetic variety which are expected to be carriers of alleles identical by descent and the difference between the mean of the genotypic values of the individuals in the synthetic variety which are expected to be carriers of two allels which are not identical by descent and Ho. On the context of this finding the prediction of synthetic varieties is discussed when lines from "x" generations of selfing are considered.
