De una diplomacia desaparecida : la política exterior de la República Democrática Alemana y sus relaciones con América Latina

After 40 years of existence in Central Europe, the German Democratic Republic disappeared from the political map. The historical analysis of the failure of this political system that focuses on internal aspects must also include international relations. Starting with the reasons for the study of the foreign policy of this State, in this paper the function and the dilemma of foreign policy in a closed society that was unable to cooperate internationally is defined. The decision-making process in the international arena is described in this monistic and strongly centralized political system and carries out a periodization of its foreign policy. Drawing on extensive archive material, the second part presents an empirical study on the GDR's relations with Latin America, focusing on political relations, trade, and the ideological dimension.
