Experiences with the adoption of thinning practices

The company Agroince Ltda., in view of a history of oil palms growing too large, with excessively long leaves that prevented the development of weed populations, and ensuing pruning and harvesting problems, decided to undertake a thinning program. To this end, the company tried two different treatments (one with dependent polygons and the other with independent polygons) and a control group. The program was originally intended to run for 3 years, of which 22 months have passed, but on the recommendation by Cenipalma it was extended to 5 years. The results presented in this report, although not conclusive, shed light on what can be expected from a thinning system.
