Oil recuperation efficiency depending on geometric configuration and of time spent In preclarifying equipment

This study, carried out in the palm oil mill of Aceites Manuelita S.A. (San Carlos de Guaroa - Meta, Colombia) shows the results of the efficiency of diluted crude palm oil separation in two pilot static clarifier tanks (named preclarifier). Each tank had the same total volume of 3 m3, but different length: wide ratio (L:w) of 5:1 and 2:1. The pre clarifiers were tested by using four residence time of the diluted crude palm oil of 17, 24, 40 and 60 minutes. The results showed that by using the pre-clarifiers was possible to recover oil from 55 to 80% and to improve the oil quality due to the decreasing of 0.4 percentages on free fatty acids. For all the residence time evaluated, the efficiency of the oil recovering was better in the pre-clarifier which had a L:w ratio of 5:1 compared with the one that had a L:w of 2:1. Instead of the fact that the two pilot pre-clarifiers were not designed for the size of the palm oil mill, it was found an increasing of the oil palm extraction capacity from 2.40 to 2.57 m3 in volume / t ffb (fresh fruit bunches) hours. There was also a reduction in operating time of 18% of the sludge separator. These results shows that the use of pre-clarifier tanks in a palm oil mill is a good alternative to optimize the oil recovering, to reduce operation costs, and to increase the oil extraction capacity.
