Factors Affecting the Long Term Outlook for the Global Agricultural Markets Implications for Palm Oil Producers

The focus of this presentation will be on where usda believes long term agricultural prices are headed, including those for vegetable oils, and the supply and demand factors that will drive the outlook. Our view is that prices for all ag commodities that are traded globally (including palm oil) will remain fairly high over the next 10 years due to particularly strong demand growth from emerging markets, the value of the dollar, growing biofuels production, and continued expansion in global agricultural trade and trade liberalization. Producers will respond to the higher prices and profitability with increased land under production and greater use of technology which will moderate the price pressures. This is particularly the case for the fats and oils market in general, and palm oil production in particular.
