Advances in the Development OxG Hybrids in Palmeras del Ecuador
The company Palmeras del Ecuador S.A., located in the northwestern Amazon region of Ecuador, has been cultivating African palm since 1976. Its climate and soil conditions are appropriate for this crop, having reached an area of 6,800 hectares of E. guineensis materials until 1997. As of 1983, the first cases of the complex known as bud rot appear with similar symptomatological characteristics of those found in the eastern valleys of Colombia and Brazil, where it was identified as “fatal yellowing”. About 4,500 hectares of E. guineensis material in Palmeras del Ecuador were devastated by the aggressive lethal behavior of this disease until 1997. During this time, research was conducted in search of the disease inoculum as well as its possible vector insects. The lack of results of this effort determined research to be redirected to genetic breeding, in search of new varieties less prone to this flagellum. With the cooperation of Cirad, new crossings begin to be assessed. These took oleifera palms of American origin as female parents, some of them from Central America, Colombia, Peru, and Brazil, in crossings with E. guineensis male parents that presented less proneness to similar diseases and had demonstrated good fruit production at the same time were rich in oil production. The aim of this paper is to inform the oil palm sectors in Latin America about the progresses achieved in obtaining a new hybrid material which we have denominated “high oleic”. It is less prone to pc complex, with good fruit yield, an extraction which is continuously improving, and a higher oil quality. In this presentation, we try to summarize the most important experiences in the agronomic management of this material, which up to now shows very satisfactory results, and with the continuous research we are conducting to this effect in different breeding camps, it could ensure the true potential of this new variety.
