FR 38. Influence of west-african lambs weight at birth on the mortality and growth rate
One hundred tirty four lambs (L) and 137 ewe lambs (EL) west-african were used to study the effect of birth weight on the mortality and growth rate. The lambs were grouping in born weights ranks (A= > 1.3 and < 2.0; B= >2 and < 2.5; C= > 2.5 and < 3.0; D= > 3.0 and < 3.5). The information was taken from «Palmichal S. C.» Experimental station, located at El Hornito, Miranda county, Zulia state, Venezuela, characterized as very dry tropical forest. The evaluation was done from 1993 to 1995. Least square means from analysis of variance was done to analize the data. The mortality (A= 28.57; B= 13.64; C= 11.76 and D= 5.17 %), body weight and average of daily gain (A= 59.0; B= 71.0; C= 69.4 and D= 77.4 g/day) were affected (P<.05) by weights ranks and the lambs with weighs at birth between 1.3 and 2.0 kg. had the worse performance.
