Foliage of trees and shrubs in dual-purpose bovine production systems
The foliage of tropical shrubs and trees represents an important source of nutrients for cattle grazing tropical grasses. The chemical composition, digestibility and consumption of shrub and tree foliage are generally satisfactory for use by ruminants, providing protein in the rumen that favors a rapid availability of nitrogen for microbial growth. However, the availability of energy in relation to that of nitrogen in the rumen seems to be a restriction for the efficient use of foliage. The incorporation of the foliage of shrubs and forage trees in the ration of ruminants has the potential to increase animal production in dual-purpose systems in the tropics since they are an important source of nutrients for cattle that consume grasses under grazing.
