Primary schooling and literacy in the Caribbean
The paper recognizes that a serious obstacle to teaching children to read in English (the language of literacy in the Commonwealth Caribbean) is the creole language spoken by the majority of children. It examines the factors responsible for the continuous inadequacy of English-language teaching in the region and suggests ways in which primary school teachers should develop themselves in order to achieve the main aim of primary schooling, which is to create literate and numerate individuals.
