The OAS debated the controversial issue of Latin American banana exports to Europe. Ecuador laid a resolution from Latin American banana producing countries protesting the proposed EC banana regime, which was rejected by a number of Caribbean delegates. Correspondent - Debbie Ransome reports from an interview with Ambassador Kingsley Layne of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Cubans went to the polls to elect 589 candidates for the National Parliament, all chosen by the ruling Communist Party – no incidences were reported. The elections were the first direct polls to the country’s national and regional and assemblies since President Fidel Castro seized power in 1959 – correspondent Lionel Martin reports from Havana, Cuba. The international car industry is expected to double its demand for aluminum – this is good news for Caribbean bauxite producers - correspondent Mike Jarvis reports from an interview with mining analyst Jeff Campbell – Bauxite. Puerto Rico is considering asking the rest of the Caribbean to support it lobby to keep its 936 program (Section 936 grants tax privileges to U.S. corporations operating on the island and is the cornerstone of the Puerto Rico's development program). Dr. David Lewis, Assistant Secretary of State for Caribbean Development explains to correspondent Debbie Ransome. Canada’s Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announced his intention to resign in the face of increasing economic unpopularity at home over his economic programs. He had repeatedly proposed a naval blockade of Haiti to force the de facto government to restore democracy.
