Bouwstenen voor een risicobeoordeling dierenwelzijn in de varkensketen : Deskstudie en expertopinie

In this desk study and expert opinion for risk assessment we have systematically assessed the severity (intensity), duration and prevalence of welfare consequences in terms of reduced pig welfare, including the (un-)certainty, risk factors (hazards) and welfare indicators for different types of animals (sows, piglets, weaners, finishing pigs and boars), 3 concepts (conventional, Better Life 1 star (BL*) and organic) and 3 phases (on-farm, transport, slaughter). The most important welfare consequences during the on-farm phase are inadequate exploration and foraging (in conventional and BL*), (lying on) uncomfortable floors (in conventional and BL*), limited space (esp. conventional), hunger in dry sows (esp. conventional and BL*), fixation in the farrowing crate (conventional and BL*), tail docking (conventional and to a somewhat lesser degree BL*), weaning stress (conventional, BL* and organic), sexual frustration of adult boars (conventional, BL* and organic), inadequate enrichment of boars (conventional and BL*); for the transport phase: social stress (weaned piglets, finishing pigs, sows), hunger (esp. finishing pigs and sows), fear and stress (esp. finishing pigs and sows); for the slaughter phase: social stress (finishing pigs andsows), stress when moving pigs to the electrical stunner (sows), hunger (finishing pigs and sows), CO2 stunning (finishing pigs), fear and stress (sows and to a somewhat lesser extent finishing pigs). Animal welfare will remain a point of attention related to integrated sustainability for the Dutch pig production chain.
