It Takes a Whole School : An Introduction

For the last 40–50 years researchers and policymakers have been writing alarming texts pointing at the dismal state people and the entire planet Earth are in. Since then, a growing group of environmental and science educators have worked tirelessly and determinedly towards promoting an education that engages young people in environmental issues, connect them to nature and the outdoors, and even make them more ‘action competent’. Still, arguably, not much progress has been made in developing a more sustainable world. By and large, education has not yet found a way to enrich, engage and empower young people. Rather than optimizing conventional ways of teaching and learning by adding on or even integrating sustainability related topics, this book explores an integrated Whole School Approach as a potentially deep and meaningful response from education to help young people in addressing the grand sustainability challenges of our time. This opening chapter provides an introduction to the book.
