The effects of nature restoration measures on vascular plants, butterflies and breeding birds: A systematic literature analysis and assessment of four areas based on SNL monitoring This report documents what is known about the effects of nature restoration measures on three species groups (vascular plants, butterflies and breeding birds) from a systematic review of the literature. In addition, aerial photos and monitoring data on four areas were analysed to determine the effects and cost-effectiveness of nature restoration measures. The literature analysis shows that converting agricultural land to new nature has a positive effect on the species diversity and abundance of the three investigated species groups, both in general and specifically for target species of nature policy. For nature restoration measures in existing nature conservation areas the picture was mixed: more often than not these measures do not deliver the desired increase in species diversity (of all species or only the target species) or species abundance. The method for determining the effects of nature restoration measures using aerial photo interpretation in combination with data from monitoring funded under the Nature and Landscape Management Subsidy System (SNL) looks promising for vascular plants. The method is also applicable for butterflies, but is less suitable for breeding birds. The two indicators used to determine cost-effectiveness are also applicable, but ideally should be based on actual costs. As these were not available, standard costs were used.
