Urban water distribution networks: Challenges and solution directions

Drinking water utilities face significant challenges in ensuring a reliable and safe supply of water in the face of increasing water demands and limited resources. Aging supply networks and distribution networks often result in water leakages, further exacerbating the situation, particularly in urban areas. The management of water infrastructure is crucial to meet the demands of end consumers who expect uninterrupted service and high-quality water. However, recent threats such as cyber-physical attacks and terrorist attacks on water distribution networks have emerged, posing a significant risk to their operation. Addressing these challenges requires careful consideration and the use of appropriate tools and methodologies. This chapter highlights the key challenges faced by the water industry and outlines the methodologies and tools available to mitigate these issues. It is important to note that water distribution networks are critical infrastructure and their effective management is essential for the sustainable development of society.
