Nulmeting macrofauna bronbeken Noorbeemden

Streams in the Noorbeemden near the village of Noorbeek (South Limburg, the Netherlands) have deeply incised channels, resulting in stream and stream valley drying and the loss of gradual riparian land-water- interfaces. Sediment addition is proposed as a restoration measure, but this might be harmful for macroinvertebrate populations inhabiting these streams if insufficient opportunities for recolonization remain within the watershed. This research provides an overview of the occurrence of macroinvertebrates in the streams of the Noorbeemden based on a quick scan in which 22 sites within the watershed were sampled. The ecological status of the sites is assessed based on the recorded assemblages and related to stream environmental variables. Based on the outcome of the study it is concluded that the risk of losing specific populations of macroinvertebrate taxa is little. Additionally advise is given on how the sediment addition could be carried out and a perspective is outlined focused on restoration on the watershed scale.
