Effect van substraat in de vroege opfokperiode op het ontwikkelen van verenpikken bij leghennen: proof of principle = Effect of substrate in early rearing on the development of feather pecking in laying hens: proof of principle

It was studied if providing substrate in the early rearing period of laying hens reduces the risk for feather pecking when adult. In the absence of substrate more gentle feather pecking and less floor pecking was observed in early rearing. Although early rearing conditions had an effect on mild feather pecking frequencies when adult, neither differences in severe feather pecking nor in feather damage were observed between the treatment groups during the laying period.
