Compartment height in cattle transport vehicles

Space requirements for the height of the compartment ceiling in transport vehicles for cattle were examined to determine standing comfort. Adult dairy cattle displayed more explorative behavior when the ceiling was set at 20 cm above the withers. Rosé veal calves displayed more explorative behavior, moved and pushed more. The combination of sufficient height - (40 cm space between shoulder and ceiling) - floor space and rest, feeding and watering with familiar animals may result in quiet and fit animals during (long duration) transport.
