Reconciling food law to competitiviness. Report on the regulatory environment of the European food and dairy sector

Background In 2005 the European Commission (DG ENTR) issued a study on the competitiveness of the food industry in the European Union. This study is referred to as 'the first food competitiveness study'. The results of this study have been reported in Wijnands et al. (2007). In 2007 the Commission issued a subsequent study, referred to as 'the second food competitiveness study' with a view to exploring more deeply the results of the first study in the context of a specific sub-sector (dairy). The project resulted in four reports. The present report presents the legal and regulatory findings of this second study. The reports on competitiveness of the EU dairy industry and on administrative burdens are published at www.LEI.nl. The final report has been pubilshed by the European Commission in 2009.
