Effect of air induction nozzle (coarse droplet), air assistance and one-sided spraying of the outer tree row on spray drift in orchard spraying
It is important to reduce drift of pesticides in order to minimise environmental pollution, especially pollution of surface water during spray application. In a series of experiments the drift reduction on the soil outside an apple orchard was measured for the air induction (flat fan) nozzle Lechler 90-01C (5 bar) and the (hollow cone) Albuzlilac (7 bar). Applications were made with a spraying volume of approximately 200 l ha–1. Effect of air assistance (fan speed, air velocity) and one-sided spraying of the outer tree row on spray drift was also determined. The reference situation in the Netherlands for orchard spraying is a cross-flow fan sprayer, equipped with Albuz lilac nozzles. Driftreduction is determined compared to this reference situation. From the experiments it is concluded that the combination of drift reducing methods consisting of coarse droplets, one-sided spraying of the last tree row and adjustement of air assistance is an effective method to reduce spray drift in the Netherlands.
