Between real constraints and leisure participation; perceived constraint patterns as a link between social-structural conditions and outdoor recreational behaviour

People were classified according to the constraints they considered relevant to outdoor recreation. Questions were: is there a relationship between perceived-constraint pattern and present outdoor-recreational behaviour; and, to what degree may the perceived-constraint pattern be traced back to the social-structural conditions? An empirical study among 1970 people showed that the perceived-constraint pattern was related to present behaviour. The perceived-constraint clusters differed in several social-structural characteristics, but these did not predict cluster membership very well. The predicted classification, using social-structural characteristics, gave more information on outdoor-recreational behaviour than the actual classification.
