In-service training of primary school teachers in the ten Northern States of Nigeria

The beginnings of in-service teacher education in Northern Nigeria and the Teacher In-service Education Programme (TISEP), involving evening and Saturday classes, vacation contact sessions and correspondence work are described. Also discussed are the National Teachers' Institute (NTI), its aims, organization, programme, teaching techniques and results, results achieved by the Primary School Supervision Course (PSSC) for training and supervising untrained teachers and developing primary school curricula, and, finally, the Nigeria Certificate in Education by Correspondence (NCE.cc).
