Adult and continuing education: theory and practice

An educational model which limits opportunities to certain age groups does not have particular relevance to comtemporary society. Giving a rationale for the provision of education throughout the lifespan, the author analyses contemporary concepts such as lifespan education, continuing education, recurrent education, community education and the learning society. Furthermore, he presents some of the underlying philosophies and trends in current society. Theories of five educationists (P. Freire, R.M. Gagné, M. Knowles, J. Mezirow, C. Rogers) who have contributed to the knowledge of adult learning are examined and their writings compared and contrasted. Methods used by adults for learning and teaching adults are discussed with particular emphasis on adult educators and their training. Finally, the curriculum in adult education and its organization in the United Kingdom are examined
