Who are the undereducated?

A recent 3-phase research project on self-directed learning activities, conducted in rural Vermont amongst adults with less than 12 years formal schooling, confirmed earlier findings by Tough and others that more than 90 per cent of people are engaged for an average of 100 hours per year on at least one deliberate learning project, mostly self-planned and occuring outside formal learning settings. Extensive interviews and intensive case-studies revealed a growth in the capacity for systematic problem-solving and resourcefulness, and a wholeness of personality of these people normally associated with those regarded as educated because of their years of completed formal education. The inadequacy of a narrow definition of those educated was thereby emphasized and the need demonstrated for a more comprehensive understanding of education, taking account of the lifelong learning acquired in the course of everyday living
