Adult learning: research and practice
This is a review of about 600 publications which contribute to an understanding and an application in practice and study of adult learning and lifelong education. The publications included have been completed since 1965 in North America. They are grouped under six major broad themes: 1) research in adult education (state of the art, concepts, criticism, evaluation), 2) factors associated with adult learning ability (age, cognition, memory, physiology, social class), 3) participation of adults in educational activities (reasons, motives, barriers, dropout), 4) programme development (planning, needs assessment, promoting, marketing, recruiting), 5) personal variables, self-other relations and self-learning activity interactions as part of the teaching-learning transactions, 6) history and philosophy of adult education and related concepts or overall schemes like recurrent or lifelong education
