Final report of the Thai-Alberta Co-operative Assessment Project

This report traces the history of curriculum changes in Thailand since the implementation of the National Education Scheme of 1960 and focuses its assessment on the Rural Secondary Schools (RSS) Project. The evaluation of the Project was carried out in cooperation with the university of Alberta and comprised eight phases: reconnaissance, proposals, basic planning and pre-testing, data collection and analysis, review, final report and analysis. 16 schools were selected on a sample basis as well as individuals for interview purposes. The report presents the findings and conclusions of the evaluation. A progress towards a flexible and diversified curriculum has been achieved. The facilities constructed for the Project were generally satisfactory, but inadequacies exist in some areas. RSS schools were generally staffed with young, well-qualified teachers. The provision of equipment and aids showed shortcomings in some areas. The RSS were administered effectively, but scheduling and accounting could be improved. The RSS Project has demonstrated the possibility of greatly improving secondary education in rural areas. The Project should be generalized throughout the country, provided adjustments are made to offset the fact that the schools became selective on attracting too many candidates
