Recent developments in mature student access to education in South Yorkshire

This paper, reporting the proceedings of a conference held in Sheffield (UK) in 1976, illustrates how educational, vocational and counselling agencies can co-operate to form an integrated local Adult Education Advisory Service. How should 'Recurrent Education' be developed? Education does not equal schooling but should encourage 'self-empowerment' whereby people learn to control their circumstances and communicate better. Access to new open banks of information is vital. Individual case studies of counselling experience at the UK Open University are described, as well as a ten year experiment in educational guidance in Northern Ireland. A supplementary paper outlines how an advisory service for adults might be organized
