Some of the significant factors that affect participation of the older person in lifelong learning programs

Recent predominantly American literature (1975-1980) was studied to investigate factors that affect participation among the 65+ age group in lifelong learning programmes. The study focuses on the economic and geographic background, educational gerontology, the learning environment, physical, physiological and psychological characteristics, and sociological and cultural profiles. Among the barriers that hinder older persons from engaging in lifelong education are cost, inconvenience, transportation problems, attitudes towards self, towards educational institutions, anxiety about the faculty's and other students' negative attitudes and lack of information about learning opportunities. These barriers, which account for the low level participation among older learners, have to be overcome so that older people may be served better by educational institutions, many of which remain exclusively orientated towards youth
